Symbolism is a huge part of what makes Speak such a wonderful novel. First do some research about symbolic elements that have been commonly used in literature. Then look for symbols in the book and explain what you think their meanings are. Also look for the use of metaphors and similies, and offer insights about why you think the author is using them. Give some thought to whether or not you think Ms. Anderson's use of symbolism is effective in the story. Also, reserarch aspects of symbolism in the book that you feel others should know about (for instance, why does Mr. Freeman bring up specific artists and what do their lives and art add to the story?)
